Dalton finishes seventh at Thorpe Cup

Recent BYU Track and Field graduate Chase Dalton placed seventh at the 2014 Thorpe Cup in Marburg, Germany with 7,445 points, but team USA fell to Germany 38,094 to 37,438. Dalton had the third highest score among the American competitors.

The Thorpe Cup is an international track and field competition between USA and Germany.  Teams are composed of up to seven men and seven women who compete in the decathlon and heptathlon. Athletes receive a predetermined number of points based upon their performances in each of the events in the decathlon and heptathlon. The top five men’s and top three women’s scores are added together to determine the overall men’s and women’s team winners.

Dalton was selected to represent Team USA after his fifth place finish at the USA Track and Field Championships in the decathlon. He plans to continue competing in the decathlon as a post-collegiate while his soon-to-be wife, Alyssa Monteverde, finishes her college career at BYU where she also competes in the multi-events.

Cougars announce 2014 awards at team banquet

BYU track and field celebrated its first season as a combined program by honoring several key members Thursday night in a team banquet.

The most improved and most outstanding award winners were selected by the coaching staff, while the most inspirational awards were voted on by team members. New team captains were selected by the current team captains and event group coaches.

Most Inspirational

Men: Tyrell Yardley.

Yardley, a high school phenom, had a very mediocre first few seasons at BYU. Hampered by injuries, he was unable to compete at the level he did in his prep days.

This season, Yardley has overcome injuries and qualified for the NCAA West Preliminary in the 400m and the 4x400m relay. His mark of 46.95 ranks 35th in the West Region.

Women: Erin Murphy.

After trying out for the team in 2013, Murphy was cut from the roster. Undeterred, Murphy tried out again in
2014. Not only did she make the final roster, Murphy traveled with and competed for the team all season. Murphy's perseverance paid off, and she qualified for the NCAA West Preliminary in the High Jump with a mark of 1.75m.

Most Improved

Men: Tanner Sork.

Sork came out of high school as the top prep 800m runner in the country. After running 1:48.74 at the Washington/Oregon Border Duel, Sork went on to take second place at the 2012 USA Junior
Championships to qualify for the World Junior Championships.

After a stellar high school senior year, he had a disappointing season as a college freshman. Due to injuries, Sork did not compete in uniform for the Cougars. He struggled with the transition from high school to college and considered giving up running completely.

In 2014 however, Sork overcame injuries and raced his way into the No. 13 position heading into the NCAA West Preliminary.

Women: Erin Murphy.

After trying out for the team in 2013, Murphy was cut from the roster. Undeterred, Murphy tried out again in 2014. Not only did she make the final roster, Murphy traveled with and competed for the team all season. Murphy's perseverance paid off, and she qualified for the NCAA West Preliminary in the High Jump with a mark of 1.75m.

Men start season ranked No. 20 in the country

NEW ORLEANS – Arkansas’ men and Texas A&M’s women are the preseason favorites to win the national team titles at the NCAA Division I Outdoor Championships according to the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) National Team Computer Rankings released Tuesday.
Based on the top marks from the current outdoor season in combination with the top 2013 outdoor marks by returning student-athletes, the USTFCCCA computers project the Aggies women as the significant favorites over five-time defending indoor champion Oregon, and predict a dogfight for the men’s title.

Chase for No. 1 in Division I National Team Rankings is Heating Up

NEW ORLEANS – Four-time defending NCAA Division I women’s indoor champion Oregon and defending men’s champion Arkansas remained atop the second regular-season edition of the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) National Team Computer Rankings released Tuesday, but both are beginning to come back to the pack...

The national team rankings will be complied by mathematical formulae based on national descending order lists and data taken from previous seasons. For the preseason ranking and early-season rankings, data will be taken from previous seasons as well as the current season.

The purpose and methodology of the rankings is to create an index that showcases the teams that have the best potential of achieving the top spots in the national team race. Rankings points do not equate with NCAA Championships team points. A full description of the rankings can be found here.

The USTFCCCA National Team Computer Rankings should not be referred to as a “poll” as no voting occurs during the process.

The Ladder Ceremony

When I arrived in Provo in the fall of 2009, one of the first things that caught my eye about the indoor track in the Smith Field House was the top-ten board. I immediately made it my goal to get onto that board during my collegiate career so that I could be numbered among the greats.

Seven months later,  I was able to make the climb up to the No. 4 spot in the 800m, and then a month later up to No. 2. In the ensuing seasons, I climbed the ladder a few more times as I broke the school record in the indoor 800m and as a member of the school record holding distance medley relay team.

The ladder ceremony probably looks like a silly tradition to those on the outside. The coach talks about the person who is getting bumped off the top-ten board as if they are now dead. Then he or she says, "I give you Alyssa Monteverde," or whoever it may be that is now joining the ranks of the top-ten board. The team chants, "Ladder, ladder, ladder..." while the athlete climbs to the top. They reach for a piece of tape covering up their name, rip it off, and the team bursts into cheers. Then, in unison, the entire team yells, "Speech!" The athlete proceeds to thank teammates, coaches, trainers, etc. and talk about what it means for them to be on this hallowed list of athletes and the journey it took for them to get there. But for those who have the opportunity to climb that ladder, they know there aren't very many more rewarding feelings.

Hearing about the person who gets bumped off helps you to appreciate all of the work it takes to get onto the top-ten board. The coaches share stories of their best races, how hard they worked, what a leader they were, and what a great person they were. To hear that about the person you are bumping off makes you and the team realize that how hard you work, what kind of person you are, and how hard you compete will be remembered by those associated with the program, and it makes you want to be a little better and work a little harder.

Then there is something very cool about ripping that tape off and seeing your name next to the likes of Frank Fredericks, Ed Eyestone, Doug Padilla, Miles Batty, Tiffany Lott, Julie Jenkins, and Nachelle Mackie. Olympians, world record holders, NCAA championships, NCAA record holders and hundreds of All-American awards are represented on that board. To know that you are now listed among them makes you feel big and small at the same time.

The speech that is given on that ladder may seem routine, as if it was written by the coaches or the sports information department, but I promise you, it is sincere. I couldn't express enough how grateful I was for teammates, family, coaches, trainers, and the athletic department for pushing me in workouts and races, giving me the opportunity to travel around the country and pursue goals and dreams, making sure that I stayed healthy, and cheering me on every step of the way. The speech only lasts for a minute or so, but I'm sure each person who climbs that ladder could go on for an hour telling stories of what it took to get there and giving thanks to everyone who supported them.

This is all from the perspective of those climbing the ladder. But it is also very inspiring and motivating to be a spectator of the ladder ceremony. Watching your teammates go rip that piece of tape off of their name makes you want to do it too. And not just get to that tenth position, but get high up on the board, into that No. 1, 2, or 3 spot.

You could ask anyone on the BYU team their goals and they would likely tell you that one of them is to one day climb that ladder. Why? Because climbing the ladder is more than just ripping a piece of tape off of your name and giving a speech. It is the culmination of setting goals, hours of work, battling through injuries, balancing training, homework, and a social life, and finally reaching a goal.

The video below will give you a glimpse into the ladder ceremony. This is after Chase Dalton moved into a tie for No. 2 all-time at BYU in the indoor heptathlon. This past weekend at Air Force, Dalton was within eight points of the school record. He will be celebrated again today with another ladder ceremony.
